Are You a Candidate
for an Older Horse
I think of all the older experienced horses I have ridden in
my life time, and I am truly grateful.
Without these great horses I would not have competed in Grand
Prix show jumping as well as Grand Prix Dressage.
We
find in our sales business it is very hard to sell horses over
12yrs. old. Most of the time these horses are being sold because
they have had a lot of success and now their rider is moving on
to the next step. What a waste to see so many beginner riders
missing out on the opportunity to learn on these great teachers.
If horses are our greatest teacher, wouldn't you want to buy a
smart well trained horse???
Sadly the answer I often hear is "no".
I was privileged to start on some of my father's well trained
horses that were so happy to help me out and show me the way.
I think of my first jumping Grand Prix on a horse that had already
jumped some of the biggest Grand Prix classes in the world. Yes,
he truly KNEW the way.
When I began focusing solely on dressage in 2001 I had the privilege
of working with my mom on some wonderful school masters.
The older horses that I have ridden will forever be in my heart
for putting up with all my mistakes and then giving me the true
feeling when I finally got it right!
It is only the confirmed school master that can never lose his
training. He is more forgiving, and has in his memory banks all
that he needs to be your teacher.
To all aspiring young riders and Amateurs out there with limited
budgets, beware of the fantasy dream that you and your horse will
learn together.
You can't teach your horse anything, if you don't already know
how to do it.
So for those of you, who want to improve your skills; give the
old guys or girls a try. You will be pleasantly surprised at all
you will learn.
